Drones and quadcopters have become hugely massive among the young and old tech enthusiasts. These cool gadgets allow you to travel through the skies and let you experience what it feels like to be a real drone pilot. Obviously due to popularity, there are 1000's of different types of drones to choose from, which can become over-whelming to the person looking to buy for a gift, or even for themselves.

I've done some research and come up with some points to consider for the first-time drone users/browsers, to find the right RC drone that's right for them.

What's the main use of the drone going to be?

This is the great thing about drones. The fact that they can have different features, to benefit various users. This could be for someone that loves photography and wishes to make the most of camera functions and features, as well as shoot stunning videos and brilliant for selfies! Or, perhaps you require a drone that has super sonic speed capability to be able to race through the skies? Then there are these 'mini-drones', pocket sized and ideal for the younger drone fan user.

Therefore, with this question answered, you can prioritise your search when browsing to fit your require needs and wants.

When looking to purchase a quad-copter, you have to be aware that there are possibly 'add-ons' available, so it seems obvious of me to state that considering the cost you are willing to pay, which again factors into whether you will need to purchase extra accessories to enable the user full functionality for their specific requirements.

Extras to maybe think about are:

  • extra batteries

  • filters

  • propeller protectors

  • spares.

Therefore, a basic drone without all the bells and whistles might be just the thing you need for a complete novice perhaps, one of the younger children to play with. However, if buying a drone for someone whom wants/needs all the added extras to give them full flight satisfaction, then just remember to factor this in to your budget.

Ease Of Flying

There's a vast amount of choice when it comes to drones and quad-copters; you can also anticipate that these drones have different flight levels. Although there still are some professional-grade drones that are difficult to control, most consumer RC drones nowadays are very user-friendly.

For first-time drone pilots who maybe afraid of accidentally damaging their newly bought drone; well, the latest drones come with follow-me features, as well as return-to-home and other safety features, which all make user drones very easy to fly. If you are a first-time drone pilot, it may be a clever decision to find yourself one that supports most of these in-flight features as this is guaranteed to increase your in-flight experience.

Camera Resolution And Features

Shooting the cinematic drone shots you see on YouTube is so much more difficult than it appears.

Although the huge majority of drones come outfitted with a state of the art 4K camera, this does not guarantee you that you’ll end up with professional-grade footage. It takes time and skill to learn how to process and edit the pictures and footage you have shot with your camera drone.

Not only do you have to learn how to fly in a proper and smooth fashion, you’ll also need to understand how to change your footage. It is important to know how to use the intelligent flight modes of your Quad–Copter in order to yield the most out of your drone filming experience.

Local Drone Laws

Each country has its own set of rules that apply to people who wish to fly a drone. In some countries, for instance, you will be required to register your drone before you’ll be legally allowed to take it out for a flight. Also, it is illegal in most countries to fly your drone in or near airports, so you have to be sure of your current location before letting your drone lift off into the skies. Within a certain country, each county or city may have its own laws and regulations for drone flights.

Therefore, it is very important to check out what are the local rules of your town or city; you could check with your local Council authority, on flying drones before you actually decide to start travelling through the skies. By nature, this tip also applies for when you are travelling abroad or in a different area. It is never a good idea to simply take off and fly your drone around without first informing yourself on the local rules. Be safe and protect yourself and others.
